Mr. Wilford Lee Billups

Wilford Lee Billups, the youngest of ten, was born in Wetumpka, Alabama on September 12, 1941, to the late Harrison Lloyd Billups, Sr. and Mamie Lee (Tucker) Billups. He transitioned peacefully after a brief illness at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, Alabama on August 3, 2026. Introduced to Christ at an early age, Wilford joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Elmore, Alabama. He received his education from Sandtown High School in Millbrook, Alabama, before relocating to Buffalo, New York to join his siblings and seek employment. It was there where Wilford met and married the love of his life, Ruby Lee Crocton, on September 17, 1966. Their union was blessed with two sons, Gregory A. and Brian O. Billups. He and his young family became active members of Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Edward D. McNeely, where he faithfully served the house of the Lord for many years. Wilford was a man of quiet strength and exceptional work ethic. Affectionately known as “Soul” by close friends and “Bill” by family; he provided for his family with distinction - dedicating thirty years of service to General Motors as a forklift operator. Blessed with an entrepreneurial mind and a spirit of determination, he also established “Billups Records” and “Billups Steakhouse,” serving his community with pride and becoming well-known for his steak subs made with his signature sauce. Wilford stayed deeply connected to his loved ones, frequently driving his family across the country in their motorhome to visit relatives and friends. He was also a legendary hunter, fisherman, and an ultimate Buffalo Bills football fan who loved attending games and tailgating with friends and family. Following his retirement, he and Ruby relocated to Wetumpka, Alabama, where he continued to hunt, fish, and spend time with family and friends. Wilford was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby Lee, and his siblings Amon, Edward, Harrison, Jr., Charles, John Otis, James Franklin, Sadye, and Magnolia. He leaves to honor his memory and carry forward his legacy his devoted sons, Gregory A. (Mia) Billups and Brian O. Billups, both of Buffalo, NY; his godson, Frederick Taylor of Melbourne, FL; sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and his beloved sister, Mary (Billups) Dawson of Buffalo, NY. He is also survived by his loving relative, Jonathan of Atlanta, GA; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and dear friends.
