Ms. Rosa Rivera Barbosa

Rosa Rivera Barbosa was born in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, in 1940. She was the fourth of fourteen children, growing up surrounded by a large and loving family that shaped the generous spirit she carried throughout her life. As a young woman, Rosa moved to New York City in search of new opportunities. She began working as a babysitter, and during the 1960s she met Antonio Ruiz. From their union came the greatest joys of her life: her three children, Edwin Ruiz Rivera, Ileana Ruiz Rivera, and Blanca Ruiz Rivera. Rosa dedicated many years of her life to working as a skilled seamstress, sewing military uniforms and other garments until her retirement. She was known for her exceptional talent with a sewing machine, but beyond her profession, her greatest passion was cooking. She lovingly collected recipes of every kind and found immense joy in preparing meals that brought family and friends together. There was no better place to be than Pita’s house during a family gathering. Her kitchen was filled with the aromas of homemade pasteles, arroz con gandules, flan de queso, and countless other delicious dishes prepared with love. Her home was always warm and welcoming, with doors open to family, friends, and anyone who needed comfort, a meal, or a place to stay. For many of us, Pita’s home became a refuge. Waking up there meant being greeted by the comforting smell of freshly brewed coffee, with another fresh pot always waiting at three o’clock in the afternoon. These simple traditions became cherished memories that will remain with us forever. A devoted Catholic, Rosa faithfully attended church every Sunday, prayed every night before bed, and never missed her beloved novelas. She also found peace and happiness in tending her garden. She especially loved her roses, watering them faithfully and talking to them each day. She always said that when she spoke to her plants, they bloomed more beautifully—and perhaps they did, because everything she nurtured flourished under her care. Today, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those whose lives she touched gather to say our final goodbye. We remember a woman who gave so much of herself—her love, her understanding, her strength, and yes, even her wonderfully ruthless sarcasm that could make us laugh, reflect, and always know exactly where we stood. Pita’s legacy is not only found in the meals she prepared, the clothes she sewed, or the flowers she grew. It lives on in the family she nurtured, the home she built, and the unconditional love she shared so freely with everyone fortunate enough to know her. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we find comfort in knowing that her love will continue to guide us. We will carry her memory with us every time we gather around the table, brew a cup of coffee, watch a favorite novela, or stop to admire a blooming rose. Rest in peace, Rosa Rivera Barbosa. Your love will remain with us always, and your memory will forever be a blessing.
