Mrs. Mary Grace Bates

Mary Grace Bates was called home to eternal rest on April 7, 2025. She was born July 24, 1951, to Andrew and Ruby Kate Bates, who preceded her in death. She openly confessed her life to Christ at an early age at Goodship Missionary Baptist Church, Millbrook, Alabama. She faithfully served as a loyal and dedicated member until relocating to Birmingham, Alabama, in 2001. Grace later joined Guiding Light Church in Birmingham and was eager to connect and make a positive impact within the organization. She had a welcoming spirit, a commitment to community, and enjoyed connecting with people. Grace was delighted to serve as a Greeter at Guiding Light. Volunteering, attending church events, and growing in faith fulfilled her dedication as an active member. There was a tangible sense of peace and joy in the church that spiritually nourished and uplifted her. Grace worked for the Montgomery Public School System and retired after 20 years of service. After her retirement, she later found work at Birmingham International Airport and with the Jefferson County School System. Grace enjoyed traveling, meeting new people, and the luxury of shopping. Cooking and experimenting with food were her favorite pastimes. Grace truly loved and adored spending time with her family. She enjoyed various genres of music and loved to dance. Family connections provided her with a source of strength, comfort, and precious time well spent with those she loved. She embraced each day fully, spreading joy with her radiant smile. She inspired many people, and her memory will be a blessing. Grace is deeply loved and will be missed. Her children, Tammi Yvette (David) George and Ryan Perez Crawford, will cherish her memories. Siblings: Delois (Curtis) Crosby, Coosada, AL; Katie Bates, Detroit, MI; Dorothy Young, Millbrook, AL; Lucille Wise, Montgomery, AL; Sarah Wilson, Ventura, CA; Willie Frank (Carolyn) Bates, Millbrook, AL; David Bates, Jacksonville, FL and nine siblings who preceded her in death. Grandchildren: Kesha McGhee, Millbrook, AL; Ryan Crawford, MaKayla, MeKylia, and Omarion Hamilton, Montgomery, AL, and three great-grandchildren. A supportive and dedicated friend, Annie Provitt. Two special and dedicated nieces, Greta Wellman, Detroit, MI, and Kurtisia C. McMeans, Millbrook, AL, and a host of extended loving and supportive nieces and nephews.
