Mr. John "Bart" Barton Hill

John Barton “Bart” Hill, age 73, passed away peacefully with God and immediate family present on Saturday, January 10. Bart was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on August 26, 1952, as the only child to Gordon and Ernestine Hill. He spent his childhood in Rome, Georgia, and Russell County, Alabama, and then attended Auburn University, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. However, most importantly to Bart, at Auburn University he met Jane Corley, who later became his wife and best friend of over fifty-four years. Bart and Jane lived a short time in Savannah, Georgia, before settling down in Millbrook, Alabama, where Bart lived most of his adult life. Bart put his engineering degree to good use with a successful career at Union Camp and later International Paper. Bart and Jane had two sons, Robert and Jonathan (“Rudy”) Hill. With young children in the house, Bart spent his free time at the ball field coaching sports, teaching Sunday school, and working outside. Bart loved music from a young age. He played multiple instruments, wrote and recorded original songs, and loved performing every Sunday with the praise band at Millbrook First Methodist Church. In retirement, Bart embraced the things that he loved to do, including golfing and traveling with his family. Affectionately named “G-Daddy,” Bart was a beloved grandfather to his three granddaughters. Bart never missed an opportunity to be with them – often times driving early mornings or late nights to babysit or catch a sporting event. Bart is most known for his servant heart, which defined everything he did in life as a father, grandfather, husband, parishioner, and friend. Bart never met a stranger and was always quick to offer help. Every day Bart used his hands and his mind to serve the Lord and those around him. This included disaster relief, mission trips, and many projects involving porches, railings, bridges, cabinets, decks, forts, shooting houses, cars, trucks, and rollercoasters. Bart never lost his optimism or his infectious spirit, even during his courageous battle with cancer. He was especially grateful for the many wonderful professionals that provided him care at the Montgomery Cancer Center, including Ashton Jerkins and Alison Till. He is survived by his wife of more than fifty-two years, Jane Hill, his sons Robert and Jonathan Hill (Ann), and his granddaughters Martha, Lucy, and Emmie Hill. He is preceded in death by his parents. A celebration of Bart’s life will be held on Thursday, January 15, with a memorial service at the Millbrook First Methodist Church in Millbrook, Alabama, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Millbrook First Methodist Church, 3350 Edgewood Road Millbrook, Alabama 36054.
